Building a Better Working Environment during

COVID-19

As global citizens around the world were compelled to come to a halt during the time of Coronavirus, we Orel IT together with our parent company Orel Corporation persevered to stand our ground as one team. Thanks to our close-knit community we were able to sustain the workflow by working together as one and continue to render a commendable service in the IT industry.

Coming Through COVID as One Team

We succeeded in implementing company protocols owing to the aid of an emergency team consisting of roughly 10 team members with Mr. Upendra Peiris, Vice President in the lead. Orel IT Safeguard Team left no stones unturned to keep the employees emotionally and physically strong by providing them with care and guidance. By sharing COVID alerts through an internal communication portal all employees had access to up to date information on the pandemic.

Despite the nation-wide curfew which lasted for nearly two months the majority of team members were facilitated to work from home. As we clearly understood that social-distancing has been the rule of thumb to curb the virus, the Orel team made it a point to implement the practice of work from home. All the devices that were required to perform work tasks were dispatched efficiently to the place of residence of all employees along with the facility to browse the internet. As we continue to stick to our valued policy on keeping our employees safe, all staff members were advised to refrain from traveling to work thus upholding the reputation of being an ”employee first” organization.

Shopping Made Smarter With Orel Buy

The Orel Corporation team took another step to turn the tide of trying times by initiating Orel Buy an online shopping application. The focal point of the digital platform is to provide a smart solution for the delivery of everything on your shopping list right at the doorstep. With Orel Buy you can also order non-food items, including electronics, household items, grocery items, and medicine to name a few. With more than 17 000 downloads Orel Buy became a sought-after application moving ahead fast in the digital world.

Sharing with the Ones in Need – Orel Share

When the tough times started to take precedence, Orel IT took several initiatives to keep society strong. Orel Share was primarily initiated to lend a helping hand to our employees. The digital platform was first built on the concept of fighting hunger during a time when people are likely to be in difficulty to access food. But the service extended further distributing non-food items as well to people outside the internal community making the application available to a wider platform on the play store. Upon identifying the need to reach out to a wider community, The Orel Share consequently became a success with more than 2000 downloads within the span of a few months.

Reinventing Celebration of Culture

Vesak celebration is an important date in the Sri Lankan calendar as it marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha. On this day the idea of generosity is clearly reflected by the act of holding ‘dansal’ an event where people get together and donate food to others. With the ongoing pandemic, communal gatherings became out of the question but the celebration of giving was never an impossibility with Orel Share. The app was based on the concept of holding a dansal virtually as the app facilitated to share food items and non-food items with people in need.

Celebrations were confined to the space of our home and family. Orel IT paving the path to vistas of possibilities introduced another initiative to strengthen the communal spirit during a difficult time. The digital dansala made it possible to share essential items with loved ones through the Orel Share App.

Orel IT initiated ‘Work Place University’

Orel IT takes a keen interest in enriching all employees with a sound educational background. Considering the importance of being qualified in their respective interested areas of expertise, the management took the initiative to introduce “Coursera” an online study portal for the employees working from home. The employees were able to choose a course of their preference from a wide range of courses before enrolling in. Orel IT plans to further enhance the facility by building the concept of “Work Place University’’ for all staff.

Coming Through COVID-19 as One Team

Returning to the workplace after the curfew period was carried out in a highly systematic manner complying with the standard health and safety guidelines s to avoid any possibility of spreading the virus. Only 50% of employees were advised to report for duty upon the initial lift of island-wide curfew. The number of employees returning to the workplace was gradually increased once the risk of traveling about subsided. It was made compulsory to get the temperature verified

through a digitalized thermometer. For disinfection purposes, sanitation chambers were installed along with the facility to wash hands upon entering the workplace.
